President Putins uttalelse skulle angivelig bevise at flyet med Prigozhin og flere av hans sammensvorne, krasjet som en følge av forhold om bord, ikke at flyet eksempelvis ble skutt ned.

Den brasilianske flyprodusenten Embraer fikk imidlertid ikke som normalt ville ha vært, anledning til å inspisere flyvraket. Dette slik at det foreligger ingen nøytral verifisering av årsaken til flystyrten.

Sammen med Prigozhin døde også to av hans nestkommanderende i leiesoldathæren. Konspirasjonsteorier hevder imidlertid at det var Kreml som sto bak ulykken. Disse teoriene bakkes opp av en amerikansk vurdering ut fra foreliggende fakta om Putins notoriske metode for å ordne opp med sine fiender.
Wagner-gruppen, som Prigozhin opprettet, omfatter tusenvis av tropper som har vært aktive for russerne i Midtøsten og i flere afrikanske land, samt avslutningsvis, i Ukraina der gruppen skal ha spilt en avgjørende rolle.
Heretter har en av Wagner-gruppens øvrige kommandanter overtatt som leder av gruppen, hvorav en stor andel av troppene har inngått avtale med det ordinære russiske forsvaret og vil fortsette i disses krigshandlinger mot Ukraina.
